Probably at no other time in history have so many people at one time become aware of humanity’s impact on the environment. Many cities in the industrialized nations are having great difficulty disposing of their waste. New York City has even gone so far as to ship their tons of garbage out to sea on barges that are miles long! More product manufacturers are also environmentally conscious and are making biodegradable products. One product that does not biodegrade is glass. As a consequence, more garbage and waste collection sites now separate out glass products. The different colored glass is also separated. Generally recycled glass is turned into the same product it was initially, such as bottles and jars. But there are other uses for recycled glass; for example, concrete with powdered recycled glass as an additive has better overall long term strength and even greater thermal capacity. Other uses of recycled glass are counter-tops, an abrasive, and even as a water filtration component. By taking used glass out of our landfills and dumps, we can go a long way to improving our general environmental conditions. Glass also takes up a lot of space in the landfills, and less glass means more room for other biodegradable materials. You thought this was good?
